Google Plus overtakes Twitter to become the #2 social media platform on the Internet for active users.
After many starts and stops it seems that Google has finally achieved top status with its own social media network, Google Plus.
The Global Web Index recently released its Social Platforms GWI-8 Update which showed Google Plus surpassing Twitter as the #2 social media platform in the world for active usage. GWI defines 'Active Usage' as users visiting or contributing to the network in the last month.
Although it is still the fastest growing network, Twitter has 21% of the global internet population as active monthly users -- compared to 25% of global internet users who now contribute to Google+.

Google+, who despite being branded a failure or ghost town by large portions of the media, grew in terms of active usage by 27% to 343m users to become the number 2 social platform. Interestingly for Google, YouTube (not previously tracked by us as a social platform) comes in at number 3, demonstrating the immense opportunity of linking Google’s services through the G+ social layer. This is also a key indication of why Google+ integrated with the Google product set is so key to the future of search and the internet.With Google's constant development and improvement, coupled with their already powerful search engine and influential networks of Youtube and Blogger, Google+ is not only here to stay but may eventually become the top social network. However, they still have a long way to go to catch Facebook.
In this social platforms index update, Facebook was still king with a remarkable 51% of the global internet population as active users. And, although there numbers indicate solid growth, "Facebook fatigue" remains a growing concern. Yet they seem to gain new members just as fast as they make headlines for losing them.
For now it's pretty impressive that Google Plus is bigger than Twitter.
